High in the mountains of San Ignacio, Cajamarca, lies La Lúcuma, the coffee farm of Pedro Padilla Chinguel—named after the lucuma trees that grow at its center. Pedro is a third-generation coffee grower, part of a family of seven siblings dedicated to specialty coffee. His journey began at age 16, when his father entrusted him with two hectares of land. From those early days—planting Catimor and saving enough to expand little by little—Pedro carved his path into specialty production.
Today, La Lúcuma is 100% Bourbon, a variety Pedro chose for its resilience, productivity, and unique cup attributes. His processing is meticulous: selective harvesting, floating, depulping, and anaerobic fermentation in GrainPro bags, followed by careful drying on solar patios and raised beds for 15–20 days. His wife, Anaceli plays a vital role—preparing meals for workers, assisting in harvest, and ensuring uniform drying. Coffee has allowed Pedro to improve his home, support his family, and expand his farm.
What makes La Lúcuma special, he says, is its high productivity and quality, and the variety that responds so well to his land. His short-term goals include expanding drying areas and producing microlots for national competitions.
RECOMMENDED Suitable for Filter brewing methods and French press.
